From Welding to Ink: Will's Journey to Freedom, Art, and Self-Expression
Life has a way of leading us down unexpected paths. Just ask Will Hinojosa, who went from a life of welding and six-figure paychecks to becoming a self-made tattoo artist, embracing creativity and forging his unique path. Here’s how he made the leap from construction sites to tattoo studios and what he learned along the way.
Discovering a Love for Art and Welding
Growing up, art was a huge part of Will’s life. In middle and high school, he earned art scholarships and even had a chance to experience tattoo culture through a friend’s family studio. But when it came to his career, he took a different route, becoming a pipe fitter and eventually a welder. For years, he built a strong career, driven by the potential for growth and financial security.
Trading Security for Self-Expression
But something was missing. Despite earning a comfortable living, welding kept him on the road, away from family and friends. “With welding, you’re always away,” he says. “But in tattooing, I can be my own boss and have real freedom.” Leaving behind the steady income was difficult, but ultimately, Will followed his heart, taking a leap to pursue tattooing full-time.
Building Connections Through Art
Now, as a tattoo artist, he finds fulfillment in more than just the art itself—it’s also the people he meets. “The art speaks for itself, but it’s the connection that really matters,” he shares. “No matter what form or walk of life you're in, at the moment, we're all together by the form of art.” Each tattoo becomes a way to express himself and connect with others, creating a powerful sense of community.
Big Dreams for the Future
While tattooing is his main focus, Will dreams of opening his own shop and eventually expanding into real estate. “Tattooing is just the start,” he says, looking forward to a life free from traditional expectations and brimming with possibilities.
Advice for Those Chasing Their Own Path
His journey hasn’t been easy, but he wouldn’t have it any other way. “There were hard times,” he admits, “but the payout is worth it.” His advice? "Keep pushing, keep trying—that’s what I do every day."
